Encompassing just 200 miles, Spalding is located 35 miles south of Atlanta and 55 miles north of Macon. The county offers a welcoming, small town atmosphere with a host of natural attractions and vibrant culture.
It also boasts a multitude of historic landmarks, scenic parks and beautiful lakes and springs. General Lewis Lawrence Griffin envisioned the creation of a town at the intersection of two major railroad lines. Spalding’s county seat, Griffin, has grown from a railroad city to a thriving metro Atlanta suburb. It features a classic Georgia downtown district with buildings dating back to 1825 which now house boutiques, antique stores, restaurants, theatres, government offices and more. Additional communities in the county include East Griffin, Experiment and Sunny Side.
A main attraction for families and businesses to Spalding County is its education resources including Spalding County Schools, Southern Crescent Technical College and the UGA-Griffin campus. In 2014, the Griffin Region College and Career Academy (CCA) received a charter from the State Board of Education and a grant from the Technical College System of Georgia for capital improvements to the CCA’s location at a former middle school in Griffin.
The Griffin campus of the University of Georgia, was established as the Georgia Experiment Station in 1888.The UGA-Griffin campus has a long history of providing groundbreaking agricultural research to the state of Georgia and the nation. In 2005, the first degree completion programs were established at UGA-Griffin. The campus now offers ten undergraduate degree completion programs as well as graduate programs.
Southern Crescent Technical College, a unit of the Technical College System of Georgia, delivers relevant technical education at the associate degree, diploma, and certificate levels and workforce training programs via traditional and distance learning formats that promote lifelong learning and impact economic development. Southern Crescent Technical College develops students to become globally work-ready employees through the unification of focused instruction, access to industry-relevant technology and facilities, and a culture of engagement, communication, and support. In 2015 the Georgia Film Institute announced it is establishing its program, in conjunction with SCTG, in Griffin to provide training for individuals to work in the film industry.
Spalding County was certified on April 10, 2007 by the state as an “Entrepreneur Friendly” community. The location of Spalding County also enhances its appeal to new residents and companies. The major arteries of interstates 75, 85 and 285 are easily accessible; Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is only 45 minutes away, and with Caterpillar Inc.’s recent opening of a 300,000 square foot plant and $50 million investment, the county now boasts more than 65 manufacturers.
Griffin-Spalding County offers comprehensive health care for the seven surrounding counties. Spalding Regional Medical Center is the leader of local access to care and has been providing care to area residents for more than 100 years. The Center is a 160-bed acute care hospital that is fully accredited by the Joint Commission and has received national recognition for high quality care.
