Grady County’s Laura Register is invited to participate in a panel discussion on the status of women and girls during a conference at the United Nations next week. Register, who represents District 3 on the Grady County Board of Education, says her panel is a parallel event of the 61st session of the “Commission on the Status of Women” held at the U.N. Headquarters in New York, March 13-24. “I’m honored and a bit overwhelmed to be included in this event,” Register says.

One of three panelists participating in the session sponsored by The Carter Center, Register will talk about bridging divides to promote comprehensive sex education in schools. She says open communication has helped build important partnerships to support the youth of Grady County.

Register points to a group of local volunteers, of which she is a member, who work on a teen pregnancy prevention committee and who have reached out to members of the local faith community to partner on the issue. She says incorporating sex education in public schools is an important step towards equipping girls and boys with necessary information to help prevent teen pregnancies.

Other members of the panel include Lauren Hersh, national director and founding co-chair of World Without Exploitation, and Faizat Badmus-Busari, attorney and doctoral researcher with Emory University School of Law. Karin Ryan, senior advisor for human rights with The Carter Center will moderate the discussion. The program, titled “From Fear to Hope: Overcoming Polarization to Promote Rights for Girls and Women,” will take place in the Church Center for the United Nations.

Register also serves on the board of directors of Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power & Potential. She was selected this year to join the WIN Leadership Network’s year-long leadership training program for women in politics.

Laura serves as the Chair of the Teen Pregnancy Archway Partnership Issue Work Group for Grady County.
