The Hart County Chamber of Commerce recently honored student graduates of its Leadership Hart Youth program. The graduation celebration was held on May 5 at the Savannah River Playhouse. Approximately 70 guests enjoyed remarks by Derek and Kari Chitwood, founder and owners of Peach State Pride.
The 2016 Leadership Hart Youth class was composed of fifteen high school juniors from Hart County High School. Nominated by teachers and community members, participants are immersed in a seven-month curriculum developed by the JW Fanning Institute at the University of Georgia. Sessions focused on leadership styles, teamwork, and goal setting and were led by local facilitators. “This group of talented young people has given so much back to our community, and continues to do so,” said Kim Pierce, Leadership Hart Committee Chair. “From competing at TSA State Convention, performing at the community theatre, to the athletic fields, they have all found a way to exemplify the skills they have learned in this program.”
A requirement of each class is to choose a class project that focuses on community enhancement. “This year’s class decided on two projects that both centered around our community. Participants took part in Night to Shine, where they served individuals with special needs to make sure they experienced an unforgettable prom night. We also had nine class members volunteer for the Adult Literacy Center’s Spelling Bee, which brought a lot of excitement to that event,” said Pierce.
Leadership Hart Youth is sponsored by the Hart County Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Hart County Archway Partnership and Hart County High School. The next class begins in September 2016. Incoming high school juniors interested in participating should contact Principal Kevin Gaines or the Hart County Chamber of Commerce.
