Sherrie Raleigh, a May graduate of the Master of Historic Preservation from the College of Environment and Design is the new Archway Professional in Pulaski County.
Raleigh is from Macon and attended Mercer University in Macon as an undergraduate, earning a bachelor’s degree in English and communications. She then earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Middle Georgia State College in Macon. She worked in customer service for several years before returning to school at UGA to pursue her master’s degree.
While a student at UGA, she served as a graduate assistant for the Archway Partnership, a unit of UGA Pubic Service and Outreach.
“I could tell Archway is making positive impacts in local communities across Georgia and that was something I was interested in being a part of,” Raleigh said.
Members of the Pulaski County Archway Partnership executive committee met Raleigh when she was a graduate assistant with Archway and helped interview her for the fulltime positon.
“She brings so much to the table with her rich background and experience,” said Jenna Mashburn, Pulaski County commissioner and member of the executive committee. “I know she will immediately immerse herself into our ongoing Archway projects, as she has already expressed interest in continuing the momentum of our current initiatives. I look forward to sharing ideas with Sherrie for potential community projects going forward.”
As a student Raleigh worked on ongoing projects in Pulaski County, including research on the nomination of the Lumpkin Street School to the National Register of Historic Places, and a project that would create an online database for the Pulaski Cemetery.
Raleigh also spent much of her time in the past year in Hartwell compiling information to be used in developing a walking tour of downtown Hartwell.
“Hawkinsville is a historic town. We are very excited about Sherri coming on board especially with her background in historic preservation,” said Shelly Berryhill, Hawkinsville city commissioner and chair of the Archway Partnership executive committee. “She is not even here yet, and we feel she is already a part of our community. Great things are ahead for Archway in Pulaski County.”
