The Archway Partnership has partnered with the College of Engineering for the second year to provide hands-on learning opportunities for students through community-based projects. This year, five Archway Partnership communities received assistance on eight projects from 27 undergraduate students in the Senior Design Capstone course. The students worked in teams over two semesters to complete the designs and presented their final recommendations in May to community representatives.

  • Students created flood mitigation plans, storm water remediation plans and stream restoration plans for the City of Metter in Candler County. Students also produced a recycling analysis to evaluate potential recycling efforts in Candler County.
  • Students examined development density and a standalone water and wastewater system for potable water in the City of Whigam, Grady County. Students also created a facility for sewer collection and treatment. The facilities would take the city off septic tanks, and town leaders hope, set the stage for growth in the community. A third student team worked on the Grady County JDA’s Heritage Industrial Complex Renovation by evaluating the structural integrity and offering suggestions for a phased approach to renovation.
  • Students provided design assistance to support, protect and secure sewer pipes spanning the Soque River in Clarkesville in Habersham County.
  • Students designed pedestrian bridges as part of a plan for walking trial at the Elberton Highway Recreation Park in Hart County.
  • Students studied potential profitable uses for a mineral processing byproduct “thermal airway dust” for a local mineral plant in Sumter County.
